The Freida Ireland Memorial Assistance Program
Frieda Ireland was a long-standing owner of New Leaf Market. Confronted with an unwanted diagnosis in her fifties Frieda turned to food to address her health. She embraced the vegan and raw foods movements and never turned back. Her involvement included legislating for better food laws and writing her own book. Over the years she has supported the Co-op in many ways. From volunteering, to teaching seminars she shared her knowledge of nutritious food. Frieda could often be found sharing her passion for food with employees and customers alike while she shopped the aisles. She lived what she taught and enjoyed a remarkable life, free of chronic disease well into her eighties. Frieda was a beloved customer, owner, and friend to many at the Co-op and we miss her dearly.
The purpose of this program is to give all community members, regardless of income, and opportunity, a chance to be an owner of New Leaf Market and take advantage of its benefits.
What is the Frieda Ireland assistance program?
New Leaf Market will award up to 10 ownerships a year to local residents who are committed to supporting our co-op, but who might not otherwise be able to afford this opportunity. Becoming a co-op owner allows individuals to receive special owner prices on monthly advertised specials, to vote in elections, receive the Natural Times newsletter and receive patronage rebates when the Co-op has made a profit.
Each ownership is valued at $100.00 and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
Who is Eligible?
We encourage any community member who has a strong desire to become an owner of New Leaf Market and who can demonstrate a substantial need for assistance, to apply. How to apply?
Anyone interested in receiving a donated ownership must complete the official application and answer four questions on a separate sheet of paper. A committee will review all completed applications every July, October, January and April.
Once approved, applicants will be notified by phone and will be asked to complete a contract and pick up their new ownership card(s) at the customer service desk.
