We Know your Farmers, Do You?
By Jean Crozier
Fall is a great time for Florida farming and you’re invited to check it out for yourself. The North Florida/South Georgia Farm and Garden Tour, October 25 and 26, is an opportunity for you to visit farms in our region to see where your food comes from and meet the farmers who grow it.
Eating is one of the most important things we do everyday. It has lifelong implications for our health, our children’s health and the health of the planet. Getting to know the person who grows your food is a powerful way to reconnect with food and community. When you support your local farms, you get the freshest food, keep money in the local economy, and make sure that we keep farms as part of our landscape.
As we go to print, New Leaf Market and friends are deep in the planning process for this year’s fall farm tours. Farm tour brochures will be available in September at New Leaf Market and other locations in the surrounding area. The brochure will include detailed information including description of the farm or garden, times for touring, activities and/or items for sale, web sites and public restroom availability.
Bring a regional map or GPS.
The directions/maps in the brochure are provided by the individual farms, not New Leaf Market.
Bring your own water.
Bring sunscreen and bug repellent.
Bring a cooler. You’ll be able to buy produce, eggs, cheese, wine and other products of the farms.
Carpool when possible.
Please, NO PETS.
Please DO NOT visit farms before or after their tour times.
Please DO NOT enter private homes.
Stay tuned for the further information and make plans to take family and friends to a farm or garden in your area.
