President's Report

Natural Times June/July/August 2017

Natasha Hartsfield

The Board is moving and shaking in this 43rd anniversary year of the Co-op. In early April, we held a half-day workshop where we focused on board recruitment, elections, owner linkage, and the community grant.

With election season on the horizon, we hope to attract strong board candidates. There will be two open seats this season and we are looking for individuals who have a passion for seeing our co-op succeed. As a board director, candidates should be team players and expect to spend 20 hours a month on board work, which includes strategic planning with a strong understanding of the cooperative model. Necessary skill sets include a strong drive to complete tasks, a passion for working toward goals, the ability to think critically, and the ability to accept conflict and work toward resolution in a collaborative setting. Declarations of candidacy are due by Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

The Owner Linkage Committee will be sending an electronic survey to owners in the month of September. We want to hear from you! Your participation in this survey affords the board the opportunity to hear what matters to owners. The purpose of the survey is to set measurable goals based on owner wants and needs, aligned with our Ends Policies.

The Community Grant has changed this year. We will be providing one $1,500 grant to a community member/organization, and one $500 grant to a fourth or fifth grade classroom within our region. The new classroom grant will be in the form of an essay contest and will open in August. See page 20 for details.

This summer brings much more work for the Board as we are eager to identify strong candidates in our upcoming election. We have another half-day workshop planned for mid-summer where we will finalize our owner survey and begin planning the annual meeting.
