Seeking New Board of Directors Members

Natural Times, July/August/September 2013

By Dave Watson

Those interested in serving on the New Leaf Market Board of Directors (BOD), please pick up a Nomination Booklet at the service desk to become more familiar with the Board’s role and work in guiding the food co-op.

From left to right: Board Members Madelon Horwich, Jim Terrell, June Wiaz, Jennifer Agabiti-Hall, Sue HansenTo follow national and international leadership, we are particularly interested in expanding our demographic base on the BOD by recruiting young adults and ethnic minorities for service.

The Declaration of Candidacy found in the booklet is due at the customer service desk on August 7. Once interviewed and nominated to run, board candidates’ statements and photos are due at the service desk by August 21 for inclusion in the October election issue of Natural Times. Those not endorsed by the Board will need to petition to run for a seat on the Board. The petition must be signed by at least 20 owners at least one month before the annual meeting.

Board of Directors Responsibilities

As stated in our policy manual, “…the board govern(s) with an emphasis on:

  • Outward vision rather than internal preoccupation
  • Strategic leadership more than administrative detail
  • Collective rather than individual decision
  • •A vision for the) future rather than reactivity
  • (An) encouragement of diversity in the viewpoints.

The Board works as a group, with facilitation. We are part of a national pilot cooperative board project on developing BOD excellence. The training you will receive will not only help you become an effective BOD member, but will help you in many facets of your life.

In October, we will hold two voter forums. Current board members, those seeking a seat on the board, owner-members interested in learning more about the candidates, and those who have enjoyed shopping at New Leaf and want to know more, are encouraged to attend. These forums will be held on Wednesday, October 9 and Wednesday, October 23. We will start with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the forum begins at 7:15.

The annual meeting on Saturday, November 2 begins the 16-day voting period. You may contact the board of New Leaf Market by emailing board@newleafmarket.coop
