Sip Away Stifling Summer Heat

New Leaf Market E-newsletter August 20, 2012

Iced CoffeeWhen the thermometer rises, reach for icy beverages to cool down.

Of course, nothing hydrates better than water. Every morning I fill a pitcher with filtered water then drop in ice cubes and freshly snipped mint leaves. Mint's tangy sweet flavor has a refreshing aftertaste.

SanPellegrino Aranciata or Limonata are both thirst-quenching sparkling mineral waters with real fruit flavors and all natural ingredients.

Coconut water is fat-free, cholesterol-free and packed with the nutrients we lose on a sweltering day.

Rich Iced Coffee
If coffee is your pleasure, pour black coffee, decaf or hi-test, into ice cube trays. Add coffee cubes to cooled down morning coffee to make a wonderful, rich, undiluted iced coffee.

Berry Good Tea
My favorite summertime ice teas are Celestial Seasonings True Blueberry and Wild Berry Zinger. Place six tea bags in a two-cup Pyrez measuring cup. Add hot water and steep. Remove tea bags, add honey and stir to dissolve. Pour concentrated tea into a gallon pitcher, add cold water and refrigerate.

Wine Spritzers
A wine spritzer is a cool summer drink usually made with wine, seltzer (club soda) or juice and ice. Making spritzers is a great way to cut calories and reduce alcohol consumption or just conserve your wine supply at a party.

Here are three fresh twists on the typical spritzer. Each recipe will make two drinks. After mixing ingredients, serve immediately.

Melon Spritzer
1/2 cup ice cubes
6 ounces sparkling white wine, chilled
3 ounces watermelon or cantaloupe juice, chilled
4 watermelon or cantaloupe balls, for garnish

Lemonade Spritzer
1 cup dry white wine, chilled
1/2 cup ice cubes
3/4 cup lemonade, chilled
Lemon wedges, for garnish

Mango Spritzer*
1 cup dry white wine, chilled
1/2 cup seltzer
1/2 cup R.W. Knudsen Mango Nectar
8 chunks of frozen mango

*For a “mimosa-like” drink, use sparkling white wine or Champagne and omit the seltzer.

Cold Beer*
Nothing beats a cold beer at the end of a hot day. Some summer favorites are:

Victory Summer Love
A light golden ale that uses two row German malts and Tettnang Tettnang, Simcoe and Amarillo hops.

Widmer Brothers Citra Blonde Summer Brew
Brewed with Alchemy Hops and then dry hopped using Citra Hops. Flavor is light, crisp and refreshing with distinctive citrus notes and a slightly sweet finish.

Stoudts Heifer in Wheat
An incredibly flavorful version of a traditional Bavarian style Hefe Weizen. Carries sweet banana coriander and clove flavors with deft lightness.

Woodchuck Private Reserve Ginger Cider
Uses Hawaiian ginger in this limited summer creation. Very crisp and refreshing. Pairs especially well with fruit and poultry. This cider is also Gluten Free.

*Limited availability of seasonal brews. Get them while they last.

So, reach for a cold one and imagine—just two more months until Tallahassee’s glorious autumn weather.
