Many different supplements are beneficial to prevent getting sick or to shorten the duration of a winter cold or flu. Here are just a few.
Beta glucan is shown to be an immune modifier, as it activates the immune system without over stimulating it. It works by stimulating macrophages, neutrophils, and NK cells to defend the body from infection.
Vitamin C has been shown to lessen the duration and symptoms of a cold. One study indicated that vitamin C could reduce the duration of a cold from seven-to-four days and lessen the severity of the symptoms.
Zinc gluconate lozenges are shown to be beneficial for shortening the duration of a cold. Zinc is very important in the immune system and people who are zinc deficient are more susceptible to getting a cold. Zinc is necessary for the development of natural killer cells and neutrophils.
Olive Leaf extract has been shown to have antiviral and antibacterial properties and is believed to stop the replication of certain types of viruses.
L-Lysine has been shown to have antiviral properties in the body and is especially helpful for cold sores and herpes outbreaks.
Garlic has been shown to have both antibacterial and antiviral benefits.
Elderberry also is multifaceted to its approach to keeping the body healthy. It has been shown to be beneficial for coughs and congestion, enhancing the immune system, and antiviral.
New Leaf carries many different wellness formulas containing these products. My personal favorites are Irwin Naturals Immuno-Shield and Source Naturals Wellness Formula. Both are well-formulated products and should help you beat the winter bugs!
