General Manager’s Report
Natural Times, January/February/March 2012
By Larrane Hartridge
Happy New Year from all of us here at New Leaf Market! This year should be a great year for co-ops around the country, as 2012 has been declared the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) by the United Nations.
For cooperatives everywhere, the International Year of Cooperatives is an opportunity to increase consumer awareness of individual businesses, demonstrate the benefits that co-ops provide for local and global communities, and work together in securing legislation that will increase the number of cooperatives and bring the business model’s many benefits to communities across the world. Stay tuned for IYC events throughout the year, and see page 22 for details about the virtual video premiere.
Since the announcement that Whole Foods is opening in 2013, I’ve heard all kinds of rumors that we are going out of business. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We’ve been serving our community since 1974 and we plan on being your community co-operative for years to come. Granted we have had a downward turn in sales over the past two years due to the economic slump and competition, but we are holding our own and are here to stay.
We have many positive changes happening. Our new Deli manager Carla Stubbs is busy working with our deli staff introducing new recipes and programs, and our meat department is making its very own New Leaf Market sausage. If you haven’t tried them yet, add them to your shopping list. They’re delicious!
