October Is Co-op Month!

According to a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives, there are over 40,000 cooperative businesses in the United States alone, with 350 million members, generating a total of $514 billion in revenue and over $25 billion in wages.

Why do we need a month dedicated to co-ops? Via the National Co-Op Month website, “Cooperatives represent a strong business model and greatly contribute to both the national and local economies.” In addition, “co-ops don’t have to answer to outside shareholders,” they “represent democracy in action, with control exercised by a board of directors elected from the ranks of members,” and they “generate jobs in their communities, keep profits local and pay local taxes to help support community services.”

Did you know that some of our favorite products at New Leaf come straight from co-ops? Check out these three tasty treats and give them a go the next time you’re in the mood to try something new!

Blue Diamond Nut-Thins

With 100 years of experience and over 3,000 growers, this co-op prides itself on being able to deliver some insanely delicious products. Blue Diamond’s Nut-Thins come in an array of flavors like Smokehouse, Cheddar Cheese, Almond, and Honey Cinnamon and are a great alternative to chips. If you suffer from a gluten intolerance, they’re the perfect salty snack sans the gluten! Dip them in hummus, stack them with cheese, or simply eat them straight out of the bag while you binge-watch Netflix. Not in a snacking mood? Blue Diamond also offers products like its Almond Breeze almond milk. Until 9/19, you can pick up a carton at New Leaf for only $2.99!

Organic Valley Cream Cheese

Farmer owned since 1988, Organic Valley is committed to supporting and celebrating local farmers. With its field-to-table mentality and 2,000 family farmers acting as owners, it’s no surprise that Organic Valley’s products are top-of-the-line. When it comes to buying organic, opinions vary; one opinion that’s rarely contested is that if you can’t get your dairy locally, it’s best to buy from a company that makes it a point to pasture-raise their animals and to provide them with a low-stress environment. Organic Valley does just that. Cream cheese is a staple for fall baking. You can grab a package of Organic Valley Organic Cream Cheese on sale from 9/20 - 10/4 for $2.99.

Equal Exchange Organic Breakfast Blend Coffee

As one of the largest democratic worker co-operatives in the country, Equal Exchange has a mission: to empower farmers and consumers alike through fair trading. The company’s history is as exciting as it is fascinating; from an unfortunate run-in with the Reagan administration to a close call with the Office of Foreign Assets Control, Equal Exchange has gone above and beyond to make sure that their products reflect their mission. Today, Equal Exchange is the epitome of a successful Fair Trade organization. With their colorful history, it’s no surprise that their coffee is delicious. Plus, you can feel good about drinking it!
