5 Questions With Dylan Walters, Co-op Store Manager

Share

Goodbyes are never easy; especially when they are directed towards an individual who has been with our co-op since September of 2015.  We sat down with Store Manager, Dylan Walters, to get her thoughts on all things New Leaf!

If you had to pick a New Leaf product to have a lifetime supply of, what would it be?

Nubian Heritage African Black Soap Lotion! Didn’t even have to think about it… This has been my favorite product for years. It’s lightly scented (and even though it’s subtle, it smells really, really good!), it absorbs quickly, and moisturizes without any leftover greasy feeling. It’s awesome for all skin types; even sensitive skin.

What’s your favorite thing about working for a co-op?

Being a part of something that makes a local impact. Pretty much every aspect of our business is run in-house and that means we employ a lot of local folks. It’s not just the cashiers and clerks you see on the sales floor everyday. From HR and finance to IT and graphic design, it’s all done by New Leaf Market employees. We have hundreds of local products on our shelves and that means we get to support lots of farmers, winemakers, artisans, and craftspeople from Tallahassee and the surrounding areas. We’re a local business that supports other local businesses. That’s really meaningful and inspiring to me!

Why do you think it’s important for people to shop at a co-op?

Thriving local economies depend largely on thriving local businesses. The ability to spend your money at a local business that supports other local businesses is a really fantastic opportunity. New Leaf Market Co-op has been a part of the Tallahassee community for 43 years. We were local, all-natural, and organic long before it was “cool.”

For me, shopping at my local co-op (or finding co-ops to shop at wherever I go) is about supporting an organization I can feel good about giving my money to. I know my dollars are going to help pay local wages and support local farmers and other small businesses. In the end, my contribution is helping to support a healthy local community.

Describe your experience at New Leaf in one word.

Educational.

What will you miss about New Leaf the most?

The people. Co-workers and customers. I worked here over a decade ago and when I came back in 2015, it was amazing how many shoppers and owners I saw who were still here every week or every day. Working in this industry provides an awesome opportunity to build relationships with so many wonderful people. I will definitely miss the people; but I’m not leaving town, so I know I’ll see all my co-op pals every time I shop.
