Natural Baby Care
By Bridget Kamke
As a co-operatively owned business, New Leaf Market is dedicated to serving the entire community and that means residents of all ages. The following is a brief overview of the Co-op’s all-natural baby care.
If you use cloth diapers, you can buy various styles through local businesses like Ecological Babies. If you prefer disposable diapers, New Leaf Market carries chlorine free diapers from Seventh Generation and chlorine free wipes from Seventh Generation and Earth’s Best. Baby washcloths, or paper towels, soaked in a mixture of water, natural liquid soap, and a few drops of lavender or tea tree essential oil also work great.
Burt’s Bees talc free powder or Country Comfort baby cream are good options for preventing or treating diaper rash. The Co-op also offers Weleda diaper rash care and Alba un-petroleum jelly. Extra virgin olive oil is another natural barrier/lotion for diaper rash.
New Leaf Market carries Earth’s Best organic infant soy formula and organic baby food. Also available are a variety of organic rice cereals, cookies, and teething biscuits. Of course, New Leaf Market carries plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and products with which you can make your own baby food. Exposing your child to many tastes at a young age will help you raise a healthy eater.
For bath time, the Co-op offers Aubrey Organics bath soap and shampoo, Dr. Bronner’s baby mild liquid soap, Weleda Baby calendula soap, and Burt’s Bees soaps. After bath, moisturize your baby with Weleda baby cream or Burt’s Bees creams. Burt’s Bees and Weleda both make sample packs that are great gifts for new parents. To protect your baby’s skin try Avalon Organics baby sunscreen.
For some of baby’s aches and pains, New Leaf Market carries teething tablets, teething gel, and colic tablets from Hyland’s. Another teething tip—freeze baby washcloths and let your child gnaw on the corners for relief.
