Widmer Brothers Brewery in Oregon has established a reputation as folks who know how to knock out a stellar beverage.  We carry some of their year-round beers and always pick up the seasonal stuff when we can. So when we heard that the Brothers’ Reserve series was finally available we jumped at the chance. According to Widmer, their brewers, “are always experimenting with unique ingredients, unconventional brewing practices, and unexpected ideas. The Brothers’ Reserve series is a showcase of their exploratory artistry.” Whew! I interpret that long list of big words to mean one... Read more

Pecorino Ginepro is a hard, well-aged cheese from Italy that is not to be missed. Made from raw sheep’s milk, this cheese is washed in balsamic vinegar and juniper berries. After that it is aged in oak barrels for at least four months giving it a smoky flavor.

Enjoy this delectable treat with something light, like a lemony and bright Savignon Blanc, or be bold and have it with a strong Scotch Ale. Claymore’s Wee Heavy Scotch Ale from Great Divide Brewing in Colorado is a perfect example AND right across the aisle!

Named after the Colonial era Cracker Cowboys of Florida, Cigar City Florida Cracker is an awesome Belgian-style white ale. Pouring a cloudy straw color, this Tampa take on a traditional wit has moderate notes of orange peel, coriander and hints of vanilla. Cigar City then adds a French Saison yeast strain that lends to its dry finish. Even if it wasn’t a modest 5% ABV (alcohol by volume), this beer would be incredibly drinkable and refreshing. My new favorite beer in the store, and at $8.99 a six-pack it’s a steal!

Every year as flu season approaches, I weigh the pros and cons of getting a flu shot. This year, I asked local nutritionist Henry Hall, who specializes in holistic, personalized nutrition, for his opinion.

Henry gave me an article by Dr. Charles B. Simone, a respected nationally recognized oncologist and immunologist. According to Dr. Simone, there are, “more than 200 viruses that cause influenza and influenza-like illness,” yet, “at best, flu vaccines might be effective against only influenza A and B, which represent about 10% of all circulating viruses that... Clayburne, a raw cow's milk Cheddar cheese from Sweet Grass Dairy, is truly a wonder. Aged eight months, this Cheddar has a hard and flaky paste. We are very lucky to have this cheese to offer and this year's Clayburne has a special treat--added smoked sea salt! At $14.99/lb it is sure to go fast, get it before it's gone.

SweetGrass Dairy describes Clayburne as, "slightly piquant with a nice, earthy finish. It pairs well with dry, non-oaked whites like Chenin Blanc or Pinot Blanc, but can also hold its own with more tannic red wines like Chianti or Sangiovese."

Grand Cru is a big beer just in from Green Flash Brewery in San Diego, California. It is in the style of Belgian Strong Dark Ale and it certainly lives up to it. Nine percent alcohol by volume, bold malts and a very dark pour are balanced out with a dry hop. The smell alone hints at the goodness to come, with lots of fruity, dark berry notes. Enjoy this beer on a cold winter morning…err, night.

Shiner has yet again done a wonderful job with their seasonal beer. Holiday Cheer is a Dunkelweizen by definition, but they put their own twist on it. While most dark wheat beers boast a... Read more
