Annual Second Harvest Donation Drive Begins November 6
New Leaf Market's annual donation drive for America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend begins Saturday. Dollar donations will be accepted at the registers from November 6-19. The goal is to raise $4,000 in donations, $250 more than last year, and New Leaf Market will match every dollar donated up to the goal.
America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend is the food bank that distributes over 3 million pounds of food every year, equaling 2 million meals, for those in need. The food that they distribute includes donated products from national manufacturers, local wholesalers and retailers, other food banks, and local food drives. They also distribute USDA Commodities through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), and food that they purchase. Second Harvest does this in partnership with over 110 non-profit and faith based organizations who serve individuals, families, children and other low-income persons with special needs. The food is delivered and distributed to the partner agencies, who have food pantries, feeding sites and residential programs for those in need.
One in eight Americans experience hunger on a regular basis. Every month in the Big Bend, over 30,000 people are given our food, one-third of whom are children, and 11% are seniors. The numbers of those in need continue to increase, so Second Harvest is also working to increase the amount of food available. Help fight hunger and feed hope.
