New Leaf Market Supports National Food Co-op Shopper Survey
New Leaf Market, along with seven other co-ops, are asking for your feedback. The first 50 New Leaf Market owners to respond to the survey will receive a $10 gift card to the Co-op.
This is a great opportunity to get a sense of how co-op owners view local food and promotions. We realize this is a very busy time of year. Owners, please take a few minutes to answer this important survey before December 19.
Please note that all individual responses are confidential, even to the store. Member-owners only. One response per household. Respondents must be over 18.

Annual Second Harvest Donation Drive
It's November and with your help New Leaf Market is raising money for Second Harvest of the Big Bend. From Friday, November 4-Thursday, November 17 New Leaf Market will match $0.50 for every dollar donated up to $4,000 gaol. When your cashier asks the question, "Would you like to make a donation to Second Harvest today?" we hope that your answer will be yes!
Tallahassee is struggling. The number of working poor is increasing and the increasing cost of food means that more money is needed to provide the same services. Second Harvest of the Big Bend distributes over 5.5 million pounds of food every year, equaling 4.5 million meals for those in need. They do this in partnership with over 135 non-profit and faith based organizations who serve individuals, families, children and other low-income persons with special needs.
Right now over 100,000 people are living in poverty in the 10 counties served by Second Harvest. Every dollar matters, your donations help feed our communities and our children. Thank you for your support.
What's a Co-op Without a Mural?
The Magnolia Street side of New Leaf Market is going green, with paint that is. The Co-op will be the first building on Lafayette Street to be artistically transformed into a green space.
The Parkway District Merchants Guild, of which New Leaf Market is a member, is seeking artists to develop mural art, provide oversight to community painters, and to assist in overall project coordination for a series of murals to be painted on the exterior walls of the Parkway Shopping Center: Lafayette Street side.
The mural is to reflect the concept of "greening" our district with art; To turn the Parkway District corridor into a "greenway" made up of our existing century oaks, as well as artwork. Park-like images, forests and pathways are to be central themes of the project.

Plastics Recycling Expanded for Tallahassee – Leon County
Reprinted from www.talgov.com
7/14/11 - Recycling plastics in Tallahassee and Leon County has gotten even simpler. Now all plastic containers less than 3 gallons can be recycled in your Smart Cart (City of Tallahassee customers) or recycling bin (Leon County Recycling customers).
Containers like yogurt cups, butter and dairy tubs, plastic caps/lids and plastic fruit and vegetable containers can be added to your Smart Cart.
Recycling is easy and, when done properly, can help to improve the environment.
What Can Be Recycled
Glass-Metal-Plastic
All glass and metal cans, bottles, jars and jugs can be recycled. All plastic containers under 3 gallons can be recycled.
Aluminum cans, glass bottles or jars, milk jugs, soda bottles, water jugs, shampoo bottles, peanut butter jars, detergent bottles and jugs and lotion bottles. Rinse (not required but can help keep bugs and smells away) and place in your Smart Cart.
Only Styrofoam, black plastic containers and microwave trays – these can’t be scanned for recycling and plastic bags (take to your local grocery store) can’t be recycled in your Smart Cart.
Paper
All paper and cardboard not intended for use with wet or greasy food can be recycled.
For example:
Items such as newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, cereal boxes, detergent boxes, paper bags, and cardboard boxes are all recyclable. Exceptions include: pizza boxes (greasy), paper towels (wet), clothes, wire hangers, computers, and more.
Frequently Asked Questions
1 - Are we going to have to pay more for this service? No, there will be no change to the existing recycle collection system or cost. Recycling will continue with the same collection containers and collection schedule.
2 - Can I get money back or a credit on my utility bill for the materials I recycle? No, all revenues received from the sale of recycle materials are used to fund the recycle program.
3 - What do I do with bottle caps and container lids? Before tossing your container into the recycling bin, rinse the container and replace the cap or lid back unto the container. This minimizes the number of lids and caps that fall out of the collection and sorting system.
4 - Can I recycle any plastic that has a recycling sign and number on it? Almost. Tallahassee and Leon County now collect every type of household plastic container that holds less than three gallons. Plastic containers that held automotive fluids, pesticides, herbicides or other hazardous materials should be taken to the Hazardous Waste Center, located at 7550 Apalachee Parkway.
5 - Why can't I put black plastic into my recycling collection? Plastic items are sorted by optical scanners, which use the reflection of light to identify the types of plastics. Black plastic does not reflect light, so cannot be seen and sorted by the scanners and could end up contaminating other materials. Microwave food trays, which are normally black, are also made of a special type of plastic which cannot be easily recycled.
6 - Do I have to remove labels from plastic containers? No, leave the labels on all containers; bottles, jugs, cans and glass bottles and jars.
7 - What if I want to recycle but don't have a recycling barrel or bin? There is a number of remote recycle drop off locations available in the city and the county. Visit the websites below for more information on these locations.
8 - Can I recycle plastic bags? No, not through curbside collection. Plastic bags can be returned to local grocery stores for recycling.
9 - Can I recycle my laundry detergent bottles? Yes, just rinse and empty before placing them into your recycle bin or Smart Cart.
10 - Where can I take other plastic household items that cannot be recycled? Contact local charity organizations to find out if they would be interested in any other plastic items you have.
11 - Will my recycle collection schedule change? No, it will continue to be provided using the same collection containers and collection schedule.

2011 Wakulla Wildlife Festival
3/14/11 - New Leaf Market is a proud sponsor of the 2011 Wakulla Wildlife Festival April 1-2. What began as a welcome back songbird festival has grown into a two-day celebration of Wakulla Spring Basin's natural environment and rich heritage. The hard-working folks of a not-so-distant past will appear in a segment entitled Living History Demonstrations on Saturday from 10 am-4 pm.
Your $6 per vehicle donation to The Friends of Wakulla Springs supports the shows and programs at Wakulla Springs State Park on Saturday between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Among these is a presentation regarding common butterflies that thrive in the Florida Panhandle, the fancy clogging footwork of the Hot Pepper Steppers, and a cave diver's view of the largest submerged cave system in the United States.
Join the Center for Wildlife Education, Georgia Southern University, for four exciting shows. Be mesmerized as you discover the mysterious vital role snakes and lizards play in our world. Eagles, hawks and owls swoop overhead while their handlers present predator/prey relations and raptors as indicators of environmental health. There will be considerable audience participation.
Musicians celebrating the natural environment include Sammy Tedder skillfully blending nature's symphony with his performance on Native American flute or alto sax during the Art on the Terrace and silent auction held Friday evening, April 1. On Saturday, April 2 the bluegrass sounds of Scrub Oaks, Coon Bottom Creek and 'Pickin' & Grinnin' fill the air in the Exhibitor area. Festival goers, who mingle on the green outside the bathhouse at Wakulla Springs State Park between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm, are sure to be delighted by the upbeat entertainment.

One in eight Americans experience hunger on a regular basis. Every month in the Big Bend, over 30,000 people are given our food, one-third of whom are children, and 11% are seniors. The numbers of those in need continue to increase, so Second Harvest is also working to increase the amount of food available. Help fight hunger and feed hope.
