Athletes: Probiotics Show Promise as Workout Aid
The pilot study findings were presented at the 2014 International Society of Sports Nutrition conference. According to study co-author Dr. Ralf Jaeger, “Probiotics have been shown to help an athlete’s immune system recover from tough workouts and competition,” referring in part to research that found reduced frequency of upper respiratory tract infections in athletes training during the winter. That led researchers to wonder whether probiotics might enhance athletic performance in other ways. Says Jaeger, “Our pilot study is the first clinical investigation linking probiotics to an increase in performance, an increase in power.”
For general health, probiotics are already associated with beneficial effects on many digestive conditions and immune functions, including irritable bowel, yeast infection, constipation, common cold, and sore throat.
